Easter Raffle

Today we had our annual Easter raffle. Girls from 6th class sold the tickets to the other classes. Denise Rabbitte donated 10 Easter eggs to be raffled off as prizes. Ronan Byrne ‘The Friendly Farmer’ donated a voucher for two ducks as prizes.

In total we raised €289.00 to go towards the school extension fund. It was a great success and was so enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who helped out by either buying tickets or donating the wonderful prizes.

We hope that all the winners enjoy their prizes. Have a Happy Easter and enjoy the holidays.

Thank you to 6th class girls for organising the raffle sales.

Planting Trees in our community

Yesterday, the 31st of March 3rd and 4th and 5th and 6th class went to plant trees at the side of the pitch with Andrew who lives beside our school. Before we went down to the pitch Andrew had cut down all the thorn bushes and briers. There was only one tree in there. Andrew had planted lots of ash trees. The ash trees have black buds. We split into five groups of five and Andrew gave us some holly trees to plant in different places. My group planted seven trees. In total our class planted 26 trees. First we had to dig a whole deep enough so that all the roots were below ground level. Andrew told us not to stamp on the shovel when we are digging because he had to get five stitches in his foot because the shovel went through his boot and into his foot once before. We had to be careful with the shovel. There were lots of stones and roots under the ground so it was hard to dig deep without hitting a root or a rock. After we planted all the trees we went around picking up litter around the pitch. We found lots of cans and bottles. We also found lots of paint tubes and papers. We filled two big bags of rubbish. On Saturday the 4th of April there is going to be a clean up around the Newcastle community. All are welcome. I had a great time and now more animals and birds can live beside the pitch.
Thank you Andrew for helping us out.

This is Andrew explaining what we need to do.

We found lots of rubbish at the pitch.

Everyone helped out.

This is one of the holly trees we planted.

We all helped to dig the hole for planting the tree.

Planting trees

On the 31st of March 3rd and 4th went to plant trees in the pitch. The guy who did it with us was Andrew who lives beside our school. There was a girl who did it with us as well her name was Barbara.

We planted Holly trees. We had to go in groups of fives or sixes. Before we went to the pitch Andrew had already cut down a lot of briers there is still some left. Andrew had already planted ash trees and he told us how to tell the difference between an ash tree and a normal tree. He told us how to dig properly. He said not to stamp on the shovel because it could go right through your foot. He told us that he once had to get five stitches in his foot.

Everyone got to plant at least one tree each. Then we had to pick up lots rubbish. Darren found lots of cans. Out of all the briers there was only one tree standing. Niamh found an old tap in the bushes. We filled up two bags of rubbish. There will be a clean up on Saturday around the community. Everyone is welcome!

We weren't afraid to get our hands dirty!

We worked together to dig the hole. We needed lots of strength.

Andrew showed us exactly what to do when planting the trees.

It was a great team effort!

Planting trees.

On the 31st of March 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th went down to the pitch to plant trees. We planted holly trees and 5th and 6th planted ash trees and hawthorn trees. Andrew who lives next door did it with us and Barbara. He cut down all the briers and planted 500 trees in a small place. Out of all the bushes there was only 1 tree.

In total we planted 26 trees. We were also picking up rubbish . Andrew told us not to stamp on the shovel because it could go through your shoe.
He told us how to identify the ash tree. It was the tree with the black buds on top.
We were put into groups of five to plant the trees . We started at 3 trees and when we finished we could plant more. The ground was very rocky so everyone had to help with the digging. When we were picking up rubbish we found very odd things like a tap.

The girls worked very hard.

After all our work here is on of the trees planted!

It was important to make sure the plant was secure in the ground.

Here we are digging the hole.

Another great team effort...

Andrew gave us lots of help.
